21 year old rapper Hurricane Chris is best known for his triple platinum single ‘A Bay Bay’ which came out in 2007. In 2009 Chris gained similar success with the Play N Skillz produced track ‘Halle Berry (She’s Fine)’ the number one anthem for saluting beautiful women. Since 2007 the Louisiana native has learned a lot about life and the music business and is all set to unleash his new album ‘Unleashed’ on Polo Grounds/J Records.

On December 21st you release your second album ‘Unleashed’ which is mostly freestyles! Where the concepts thought up before you went in the booth or did you just go in there and just straight spit?

Yeah I’m like a wild animal!! ‘Unleashed’! I freestyled the whole album there was no use in writing because I got a powerful mind. I’ve got so many ideas in my mind that I just got to go in the studio and drop it. You feel me? Once I hear the beat I don’t waste no more time, I just go in the studio and lace it.

Your first single ‘A Bay Bay’ off your debut album ‘51/50 Ratchet’ went triple platinum, not knowing that the single would be a big success has making this album put pressure on you to follow the success of that single and album?

I didn’t really have any pressure with my last album because when I dropped that album I was a freshman in the game. Now I’m a sophomore I know way more about the game I’m a little more experienced I’m a little more comfortable and I’m 101% better at this rap game. Right now they’re saying I’m the coldest rapper walking on two feet! We just got to let them know what time it is on December 22nd when the album drops.

How long did ‘Unleashed’ take to put together?

It didn’t take much longer than about four studio sessions.

Who provided the production?

I went to Atlanta and got some beats from Shawty Redd, I went to New York and rocked with some different producers. I got the Inkredibles on my album, I had to go back and get Phunk Dawg because he produced my first single, ‘A Bay Bay’. I also got Bangladesh and a whole lot of other producers like a producer from Shreveport, Louisiana that I’m doing a lot of music with named O.

The new single from the album is ‘Headboard’ featuring Mario and Plies was that a song you worked on together or did you just go in and freestyle your part and the other artists just added to it?

I came up with the concept on my own I went in the booth and laid it down. Plies and Mario got on there and now it’s a hit! You feel me?

You also had major success with the track ‘Halle Berry (She’s Fine)’ tell us about the track and why you decided to use Halle Berry as a concept for the track?

I was in Dallas, Texas working with producers Play N Skillz, they did ‘Riding Dirty’ for Chamillionaire. They came across a beat and they asked me if I liked it and I did so I put the ‘Pow, pow, pow, pow’ on the chorus. They have an artist by the name of Superstar J so once I bought the song I hollered at Superstar J to get a verse on there so I could do Play N Skillz a favour by bringing one of their artists out. It was a hit from there. We were thinking about all the women that keep themselves well kept, and have that go getter attitude and personality like Halle Berry. That’s how we came up with that track.

There’s also a dance move to the track how did that come about?

(Laughs) We put the song out and then we went on You Tube and the fans had took the song and made up a dance by themselves! When I turned on the computer they were already dancing to it the way they wanted to do it.

It’s mad that there’s even guys doing the dance!

Yeah (Laughs) everybody doing the dance, dudes, girls, babies, older people they’re all doing the Halle Berry!

51/50 is also the name of your label, are there any other artists signed to the label or are you just concentrating on your own music at the moment?

I got an artist coming out by the name of Louisiana Will, Big Papa, Calico we’re dropping some more artists too. Louisiana Will got a single which is about to drop in a couple of weeks. We’re going to get it out in the streets and get it poppin’. A couple of my dudes out here are running our city, the state and surrounding area real heavy, we’re about to bring them to the forefront.

You’ve worked with artists like Mike Jones and Bow Wow is there any artists or producers out there that you would like to work with?

I want to work with a gang of people! To start i need to go in and do something with Alicia Keyes, Doug E Fresh, Busta Rhymes and Robin Thicke. You got to get in with everybody; I’d just do music with whoever. I’m not going to do anything with wack rappers though.

You’ve toured the US, Japan and Europe what has the crowd response been like to your music in Europe and Japan?

They love my music over there! I went to Japan the show was sold out, there was  80,000 people out there when we performed. It was real retarded. Ginuwine and Gorilla Zoe was over there too. It’s the real deal in Japan. I toured the whole of Germany it went down! They loved me just like they love me in America; people came to see me in their thousands.

You need to come to the UK!

Yeah tell the UK if they want to get Hurricane Chris for a show, imma work with them and make sure they get a good show!

Have you heard any UK Hip Hop?

No I ain’t heard of any UK Hip Hop artists. I need to come out there a get me a UK artist and they could be ‘UK 51/50’!

Can you tell us about your mixtape. When will that be out?

Yeah I got a mixtape coming out it’s called ‘Louisiana Messiah 2: Hurricane the Great’. This mixtape is going to heat the streets up I got a lot of bangers on there, I got a lot of new producers that I’ve been working with from around my way. The beats are retarded. It will be out in the next two weeks.

2010 is just around the corner what do you hope the New Year holds for Hurricane Chris and your label 51/50?

You’re going to see and hear a whole lot more of my label and artists. Be on the look out for my people they doing their thing; 51/50 we ain’t going nowhere Polo Grounds, J Records we all in this to win this.
