Mr. Brown has been crackin’ off Hits in the Rap game for over eight years. It all started with the New Millennium, (2000) when Mr. Brown hooked up with a small group of rappers and they became the Get Rich Click (G.R.C.). However, Mr. Brown’s talent seemed to surpass that of being a group member and he quickly became a solo artist. Since then he has released five solo albums and has worked with well known artists such as, Twista, Jagged Edge, Cincere, 4Tay, Cayex, Coo Coo Cal, The Outlawz and Bizzy Bone. Now in 2010 things are really hotting up for this Milwaukee based musician. We sent Tricksta to get the lowdown….
When did you start making music and realise that you wanted to be a rapper? In 2001 I was in a group called GRC that started it all for me...
Was there a person or record that inspired you to pick up the pen and start writing songs and hit the studio? Scarface, Dr Dre, The Dogg Pound & 2Pac
Where exactly are you from and what’s the Hip-Hop scene like there? Milwaukee, WI. The Hip-Hop scene is good allot better then yrs past we got allot of talent here. But talent doesn’t always get picked 1st so sometimes you have to wait your turn.
Let’s talk about your latest project. Where can people get it, who features on it and who dealt with the production? My lastest project is ZigZag vol4 mixtape.. people can get it on www.reverbnation.com/jackitdownbrown.com. The features are My artist from my label MoneyMadeMusick J-R-Rah and Yung Chamberlainn and Raw Biznez also J-Ace.. Production was done by Dirty Mouf and A-Dub..
How are you getting your project out there? Do you have a distributor involved? Mostly on online its how music is done nowadays.. No distribution yet thats what i'm working now..
Is there a shop or website stocking and supporting your music? www.mrbrownmusic.com has alot of my old music and www.reverbnation.com/jackitdownbrown is my new home.. I really like that site its really part together well... Real talk!
Getting radio play is real gripe for a lot of Hip-Hop artists, but have you had any radio play? If so what DJ’s and stations are supporting you? I have had some radio play but not allot to me.. I get luv from djs such as Dj Jazz, Dj Willie Shakes...
Do you think that radio is still as important as it was in the digital age? It's important if you a ringtone rapper or club rapper but my music is for the street so I dont depend on it..
Do you think the internet helps or hinders independent artists? It helps the internet has helped my rap career a great deal .. I luv it!
When it comes to making music what would you credit as your main motivation? Making music that people can relate to and feel in their soul.. Something I can be proud of when I hear it yrs later..
Let’s talk image and branding for a minute. Some artists spend lots of money on artwork and other acts aren’t that interested. How important is image, artwork and branding to you? It means allot to the fans so you have to take it serious and make sure you look as good as you sound..
I think that any artist coming into the game these days needs a music video. I mean You Tube is one the most visited website in the world and its still a great way of promoting a track. Have you got any videos on there and have any of them actually got played on any TV Stations? I don’t have a video yet but I will soon.. My new EP Mr Rogers Neighborhood will have at least one video.. 4sho
What was the last album you brought and where do you buy your music? Is there a good record shop in your area or do you buy on-line? The last album I bought was Scarface DopeMan Music and I bought it online off amazon its so much easier and the never sell out .. I hate that when I'm looking forward to hear a cd and I get to the store and they don't have no more in stock.. All the moms and pops record stores are gone people jus goto BestBuy or Walmart now..
