KEITH LAWRENCE from London, UK
When did you get into producing and what have you previously released? I got into production about 94-95 doing co-productions and remixes with various people. More seriously in 2000 when I bought the Akai MPC 2000. For my own label MUZIK-ED, I've done 3 single releases so far. The 1st being the double AA sider, 'Step By Step/Everywhere' by Mystro. The follow up was 'Shonoluv' / 'Muzik-Ed Special' by Seanie-T, Jef3 & Symmetric. The third is the current 'Goin True EP' feat; Karl Hinds, Seanie T, Spoonface, Pesci, Rodney-P, Joker Starr & English Kid. The 'Goin' True' EP is a continuum of the 'Bussin True EP' I done for a next label in 2002. It sums up how I feel & what I'm about right now, straight up beats n rhymes.
What would you say has been your biggest or most popular tune to date?
All of the releases I've done so far have proven to be popular in one way or another. Both sides of Mystro's joint got props via DJ's & were featured on various mixtapes. 'Muzik-ed special' did well too. Skitz put it on his Homegrown Vol 1 set & Joe Ransom picked it up for his 'Fabriclive 20' compilation in February this year. With the 'Goin' True EP', every track is getting love so far which is great. By a nose it's 'Let it be known'. The rhythm track proved popular from when it was first featured on Seanie-T's 'Dark Horizon Vol 2' mix CD.
The new EP is out and features some hefty collobo's. Let's talk about the Seanie T and Karl? Tune 'Let It Be Known'. How did you hook up all the artists for this track and how long did it take to make?
For 'Let it be Known', the collabo was made possible by Seanie really. On his 'Dark Horizon 2 CD' he's got a version of it featuring Spoonface, Karl Hinds & Pesci. I felt it would be strong enough to put out so I called them & added Seanie to the line-up. I gave them a couple o' weeks to write some new lyrics. Once that was done, got them together and done the vocals in a few hours.
UK legend Rodney P blesses ya beats hefty with the 'Style & Fashion' track. What was it like working with Battersea's finest?
Working with Rodney was an honour & a pleasure, a man I've been a fan of and respected for what he's done for hip-hop from the UK. We've worked together in the past on a project which unfortunately never saw the light of day. So when we got together to do "style & fashion", he just got busy with it & turned it out like the pro he is.
Good to see you pushing the underground forward too with the likes of English Kid and Joker Starr getting in on the action too. Tell us a little about these emcees.
Joker Starr came to my attention when he put out his debut single 'Raw Spittage' a couple of years back. I felt his crazy anarchic flow & said to myself "I'm gonna work with him". Me & English kid met up about 18mths-2years ago. He used to be in a crew called 'In Essence'. What I like about Englishkid is his hunger & passion for the whole game which comes across as raw energy when he spits. The same goes for Joker Starr too, people like them keep me motivated. There'll be more from them in the future via Muzik-ed.
It seems you work a lot with London artists. Have you ever thought of working with rappers and singers outside of the smoke?
If opportunities arise & it's viable, I'll work with anybody from anywhere. As long as you have talent & I'm feeling you, rappers & singers alike.
The UK scene has changed so much in the last five years with the explosion of the UK 'urban scene' and the 'UK grime' scene. Have you any plans to work with artist from this scene such as Dizzie, Wiley, Kano etc?
I have no plans to work with those cats, but I'm not opposed to it. Those guys have got skills too & if they're up for riding Straight up hip-hop then come we go!
So when exactly does the 'The Goin True EP' drop and where will be the best place to buy it on line?
The EP is out now released June 20th. I would check out www.suspectpackages.com first but there are a few online stores that have it too.
The EP is due out on your own imprint 'Muzik-ED, any thoughts of brining any other emcees thru on the label?
There are a few more MC's I have in mind to work with via Muzik-ed & I'm always on the look out for the 'new breed'. This goes for producers & singers alike.
So what are your plans after the EP? Can we expect a Keith Lawrence CD album sometime soon?
As far as an album is concerned, yes at some point but I'm not gonna rush it. I'm getting in that frame of mind more now seeing that the interest in what I'm putting out so far is getting a positive reaction from the public. Look out for the remixes I've done for DJ Mentat's previous singles. Seanie-T & Roots Manuva-'Rugged Wid It' & Skinnyman's 'When I give my heart to you'. I've produced a track for Dominant G (formerly of Psychic Phenomena) which is scheduled for a September release on his label, & producing tracks towards Travis Blaque's album scheduled for next year. I'm looking to do singles for Englishkid & Pesci before the years out for MUZIK-ED.
Are you still doing any radio shows, is so what day, time, frequency, etc are you at?
Yes. You can hear me presenting 'THE GROOVE ASYLUM' on BASSLINE 97.9fm TUESDAYS 7-9pm if you're in London or the 'surrounding counties'. You can also find it on the web. I play upfront US & UK R&B/HIP-HOP & SOUL & then the last Tuesday of the month, it's'THE MUZIK-ED SHOW'. I flip it ol'skool with funk & reggae added at times to the above genres. I've done this recently because I'm tired of dj's calling 1995 old skool! This Black Music thing is older than 10 years so I try to let heads know the real deal!
How can artist get music to you for you to check out?
You can send your demos to MUZIK-ED PRODS, P.O BOX 36758, LONDON SW9 7WA. This goes out to producers of hip-hop, R&B & soul even Broken beat as well. (Nasal sounding R&B chicks & Gangsta rappers need not apply, thank you!)
Do you have a website?
Anybody you'd like to shout-out?
I'd like to shout out all the artists I've had the pleasure to work with so far & their insight into what this business is about. Seanie-T "THE REAL BIG MAN! MY ARTIST!" All the artists I'm GONNA work with even if they don't know it yet! My girlfriend Sarah, for her unlimited support. Every DJ, radio station, reviewer or 'media darling' that has showed me love so far. David Silverman & Faz @ Outpost for helping me put it out there, DJ Mentat (The next nice guy to buss!)Boombox & Cargo distribution. (If your record shop hasn't got my tings tell them to give these guys a call!) And last & by no means least to everybody who has bought & Bumped the Muzik-ed vibe, Thank you very much 1 Love Peace. KL.
