Phoenix Da Icefire has just dropped his new CD which is produced by the legendary UK beat-maker Chemo and features collaborations with Genesis Elijah and Kyza Smirnoff. This man can spit, so we sent Tricksta to get the down-low.
What’s the Hip-Hop scene and industry like where you live? The hip hop scene is very close circuit, once you break into the scene everyone pretty much knows everyone, London is very small lol, for me there are only a few people I feel dominate the scene & hold the attention of the remaining hip hop crowd.
What projects have you released so far and what feedback have you had? Every review ive had for my mix tape has been some of the best stuff I have ever heard, its been very encouraging, I have heard people say they listen to it without skipping tracks, one review I got someone said I played it six times back to back from start to finish, people I sold the CD to said that it’s the best stuff they have heard in years… ive been blown away by peoples response.
What would say is the most popular track that you have released to date? I would say as a personal favourite UGLY AS SIN, it’s a track where im wild & free with my imagination, a lot of people commented on how funky & different I sounded, I even brought out a little bit of my Jamaican tongue for the intro!!
What producers, mixtape DJ’s, record labels and rappers do you work with? Me & my cousin formed HIGHER HEIGHTS RECORDS so that we could have our own control but im willing to work with other labels, in terms of producers im working with TRICKSTA, CHEMO, DAREDEVIL, DJ ROAST, DJ ISIS, JON PHONIX & CHEEBO, rappers such as TRIPLE DARKNESS MIDAS TOUCH, 9 PLANETS and the list goes on..
What’s the name of the label are you signed to and who are your label mates? Im not signed me & my cousin just formed the label HIGHER HEIGHTS RECORDS, he was a big influence & an important part of what made me today so we came together & decided to make things happen
Tell us about your latest release. Who features and tell us what producers where involved? JON PHONIX was the only original producer for the mix tape I thought I’d save all of the best production for my albums to come, I & Jon phonics have collaborated on a couple tracks & the album it’s going on is called BERRIED IN ARMOUR. Baptism under fire for me was both the beginning for me as an artist and the start a personal journey, in this tape I display my versatility, every track has a different style & vibration to it, for me it was important to show my listeners from the get go that I have a lot to offer
What’s more important a mixtape of jacked beats or a single on original production? That’s like saying is quantity better than quality right? for me there is no way that I could show the range of styles & emotions that I have in just one song, a mix tape to me is like sparing before the title fight, nobody really judges mix tapes anymore because I feel the bar has been dropped but when you say album or single people are ready to judge because its more official..
What radio stations in are supporting your music, and how important is radio play in the digital age? At the moment Genesis Radio are supporting me especially DJ TRIPLE from THE WORD OUT SHOW 7-9 Mondays, choice fm have played me late night a couple of times but not too many people are pushing me
You Tube is a massive medium now for worldwide exposure. Do you have your own channel with music videos on it? I do but im waiting to give you tube heads a surprise im going ALLLL OUT for 2010, I wont even speak that much on it but you will most def know im on it soon enough, you’ll hear about it
What was the last album you downloaded or brought and what else are you listening to at night? Black milk the TRONIC album, I think he is really talented he’s like the new age J Dilla... heavily under rated, Fashawn as well, he is sick his album boy meets world is a very good listen not to mention Orphans Of Cush’s album ‘White Noise’, its pretty sick!!!
What tips and pointers do you have for rappers just coming into the game? Be true to yourself, nobody wants a photo copy of an original you got to be that, nobody can do you & that’s the only thing you have over everybody remember that!!
Thanks for your time, before you go is there anything you want to add? Raggo magazine you guys are doing big things, you guys are a blessing to the hip hop scene, you could have covered Rhiana & lady gaga but you chose me… im honoured PEACE!!!
