South Carolina native Rudy Currence recently signed with Disturbing Tha Peace Records and is currently working on a brand new, highly anticipated project. The singer, songwriter, musician and producer plays a number of instruments including the piano, guitar and trumpet. His vocal style is often compared to that of Donnie Hathaway, Marvin Gaye and Sam Cooke, blended with the contemporary likes of Alicia Keys, John Legend, Ne-Yo, and Kanye West.

Hey Rudy welcome to Rago Magazine! You’ve recently been added to the DTP roster how did that come about?

Prior to signing with Disturbing Tha Peace, I was an independent artist. I released 2 indie CD's successfully and was doing a lot of touring and performing.  DTP heard from several sources about the buzz I was creating for myself and decided to reach out. They contacted management, and then came to one of my shows in Charlotte, NC.  From there they invited me to Atlanta to showcase in front of Luda and the other DTP Execs, Chaka Zulu and Jeff Dixon. The rest is history!

Recently you were on a solo Spring College Tour which started mid January and ended in May. Tell us about the tour; what cities have you visited and what’s the response been like to your music?

The tour ended earlier this month.  I hit a little over 40 colleges/cities over the entire tour. I was all over the place literally! LOL I had shows everywhere including NY,  NJ, PA, NC, GA, IN, OH, KY, MS, MI, MD, WI, etc.  I've been blessed to be able to travel and do what I love. The students always show me a lot of support and they are constantly keeping in touch with me through my mailing lists and the social networks i.e. Facebook and Twitter.

Like you mentioned briefly you’re not a new comer to the game having independently released your debut CD ‘More than you’ll ever know’ back in 2003 and you followed that up in 2006 with ‘Here with you’. You’ve had extensive classical and jazz piano training as well as experience singing Classical, R&B, Gospel, Hip Hop, Soul, and Pop music. How did it all start for you?

Well I grew up in a musical home. Both my parents love great music so my brother and I couldn't help but be exposed to all the legends such as Donnie Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, Sam Cooke, James Taylor, The Carpenters, The Bee Gees, Prince, Michael Jackson, all of Motown, and the list goes on forever...  My father who is Pastor in my hometown Rock Hill, SC is also a musician and singer so I learned at an early age from watching him. My parents put me in classical piano lessons at age 6 and my mom would take my brother and I around to all the local churches and talent shows so that we could develop our gifts.

In 2005, 2006 and 2007 you received ASCAP writer’s awards. Tell us about that and what artists you have written songs for?

All I can say is I've been blessed to be recognized for something I love to do. Music is my passion. I've written songs for Mya, Ray-J, and the Bourne Identity Movie starring Matt Damon. Most recently, I co-wrote a song for Quincy Jones’s forthcoming album. The song is titled "Bosa Nostra" and it is slated to be a single.  I've also had the opportunity to work with a lot of great independent artists.

How did writing for various artists come about? Do you just pen a song with an artist in mind or are you approached by management companies or record labels?

Honestly all of my writing opportunities have come about from just being in the right place at the right time, and being prepared to take advantage of the situation.  Also I'm seeing that more and more writing opportunities and collaborations continue to come along as I advance in my music career.

You’re currently working on a new album for DTP Records how is that coming along? What can we expect to hear from Rudy Currence on there?

The new album is titled "Black Keys and Blue Skies" and I'm very excited about the project.  I got to work with some incredible producers including Bryan-Michael Cox, the J.US.T.I.C.E. League, my younger brother Mykal Star, and several others. Also I wrote all of the songs and co-produced several of them.  There's definitely going to be something on the CD for everybody and I can't wait for the world to hear it! The first single is titled "Anymore" and it was produced by B Cox over the Outkast "Elevators" sample. Look out for it soon.

Have you got any features on there from other artists? Have you worked with Luda on there?

Right now we're still discussing who we want to feature on my album but I actually got an opportunity to collab with Ludacris on Quincy Jones’s forthcoming album. The song is titled "Bossanostra" and it’s supposed to be one of the singles on his album.

After the album is released will you be embarking on another tour and will you coming to the UK or Europe?

I definitely plan to tour and promote the new album! From my background as an independent artist I realize the importance of touring and touching your fanbase up close and personal. Of course I can't wait to tour Europe!  I've never been to the UK so a European Tour would be the experience of a lifetime for me!

I think you’ve got a wonderful voice and I think your music is what the game has been missing. Your voice and style is very reminiscent of those older greats like Marvin Gaye and Sam Cooke. What artists where you listening to when you were coming up in the game?

My parents are music lovers so my brother and I grew up listening to so many great musicians and artists. Too many to name them all... I just love good music period, it doesn't matter the genre. Some of my musical influences include Donnie Hathaway, Sam Cooke, The Clark Sisters, Quincy Jones, the Bee Gees, James Taylor, The Carpenters, Motown, Michael Jackson, and Prince.

If you could work with any artist who would it be and why?

I would love to do a song with the Clark Sisters.  I'm probably one of their biggest fans! lol They're like musical geniuses to me and vocally they were and still  are so far ahead of their time. I want to be remembered as an innovator in the music game very similar to how I see them.

Do you want to shout out your website so people can check out your music?

Oh most definitely! Thank you for this opportunity... and To all my fans, I love everyone of ya'll and I appreciate all of your support and love for me! You can definitely find me on all the social networks...
