Nova-13

Supar Novar is a British rapper who’s always delivered the goods. His debut album ‘From The Beginning’ on Kemet Records is a certified Hip-Hop classic that led to him winning awards and featuring in numerous music videos. A couple of years ago he teamed up with Tricksta & UK Runnings for a superb mixtape, now in 2009 he is back. Rago Magazine sent Brendan Deane to London to get all the latest from this excellent talented recording artist and performer…

Hi Nova, hope your good. You’ve just dropped your new mixtape which is all over Jay-Z beats. What was the inspiration for doing this?

Basically I did a freestyle type track over Jay-Z's public service announcement a while back where I flipped his lyrics to include my name like 'allow me to re-introduce myself my name is Nov's, N to the O V...' and my boy Snail suggested I do a whole mixtape cos there's so many tracks I can flip like that. At first I weren't really on the idea but then I decided to go with it a couple years later.

Out of all of the tracks on the CD which is your favourite?

I'd say it’s between 'Novar Tha Star' and 'F.L.I.P Is Forever', the first is a real personal track which are usually my favourite ones and the second I just love anyway.

The mixtape game has changed a lot since you dropped your release with UK Runnings. Do you think they are still needed?

I think in the UK they're needed more than ever but I think we need to change the way we use them and we need to see more albums come out off the back of them. Really that’s why I put this mix out for free; to me it's an advert for the album that I hope people will buy.

Talkin Jay-Z for a minute, did you cop his new album? What do you think of Jigga’s new direction?

Yeah, I copped the new album, I wasn't sure about it on the first listen cos I didn't really understand the direction he was tryna go with it but on the second listen I loved it. I think in terms of what he's saying on it and the lyrical content it's amazing and I think it sounds like a proper rounded album production wise.

Are there any Jay-Z instrumentals that you have loved to have murked but couldn’t get the beat?

Really when I was doing the tracks I was only looking at the instrumentals I could find so I didn't really think of that. I started by gathering up as many instrumentals as I could get my hand on, which was a lot of fucking instrumentals to choose from. I did want to do 'You Must Love Me' as it's one of my favourite all time Jay track but I couldn't find the beat for a while, then when I found it I couldn't really find inspiration to write to it, maybe I'll hit it next time round.

Have you any plans to do any more mixes like this? If so who’s next to have their beats jacked?!

Yeah, this one is just the start of the 'Dubplate Sagas' series, the next one from me is gonna be Nas, then we're gonna do two F.L.I.P mixtapes, one over Wu-Tang beats and one over Dip-Set beats and Danny Bones is gonna do one over Eminem beats since he took Eminem’s verse on 'Renegade' on my mixtape.

Are you going to drop a new album in 2010?

Definitely, I've got a load of material ready to compile the album; I just need to get tracks mixed and that then work out what the label / distribution situation is going to be. I've got a few options at the moment still but I'm gonna wait until the product is more finished before I decide who I'm gonna go with. Also I've got a few working titles floating about, I've already mentioned some of them which I'm gonna stop doing till it's 100% now, the albums mostly all gonna be produced by myself and Show N Prove and it's got features so far from N-Dubz and Neon Hitch.

It seems that UK Hip-Hop in its old format has kind of died and now it’s all about grime. You ever thought of making more grime?

I just make what comes natural to me, sometimes I'll do something at a grime tempo but the production would always be mostly Hip-Hop based to me, even though some people may even consider it to be grime. I just make music at the end of the day and I do try to experiment with different styles, most of the big grime artists are doing the same and the most of the successful ones I would say are making music that is more Hip-Hop influenced than grime anyway.

Tell us about F.L.I.P. Whose involved and what other acts in the crew have dropped stuff?

F.L.I.P is the team, the family, there's nuff of us, we're a movement. At the moment as far as the new project we're working on we are focusing on certain members mostly, who are ready to do this and that's Big Ben, Ragz, Wordsmith, Response, Danny Bones, Dash Gambino and myself. Then we got the producers Show N Prove and Rudi Redz and other member of the fam like Snail, Samuel Jason’s, Benny B Sides and Turbulance who all play their part.

You are playing live in London on October 8th; do you have any other gigs coming up?

Nothing planned as of yet, I been tryna stay off the live circuit for a bit to get the new material ready but I think I'm gonna get back on it real soon once I get the CD copies of this mixtape ready.

Is there anything you’d like to add?

Shout out to all the Rago famo, F.L.I.P L.I.F.E and I'm out...
