LATE & TRICKSTA Present - 'Wolfstrumentals' |
Friday, 11 February 2005 01:34 |
Wolftown like to be first. The first label to drop sh*t. They where one of the first independent labels to drop a CD single with a video on it (2001), first to have a video shot on HD / Hi- Density (2002), the first label in the UK to drop a UK only mixtape with UK Runnings (2001), one of the labels in the UK that brought you possee track (1999), one of the only labels in the UK to give back to the scene by setting up Rago Magazine, and the list goes on and on. Well they've done it again. The first ever UK instrumental mixtape!! This is ideal for MC's getting in the game thirty hip hop beats, no talkin. Big up Tricksta, Pez, jay Are, Juttla & JT for some cold beats and some exclusives!!

LETHAL & DESTRUCTION - 'Weapons Of Mass Destruction' |
Friday, 11 February 2005 01:33 |
Long-time rapper Lethal and his partner in rhyme Destruction turn up the heat on one of best London Hip-Hop mixtapes for ages. Featuring a whole host of big guest the mixtape is a must for UK Rap fans. Lethal rips up the mic on various tracks with a distinctive flow and rap delivery. Big up Skibadee (one of the jungle scene's biggest stars) for a sik double tempo flow on his take of 'Dipset' entitled 'Rip Set'. Baby Blue comes thru too with Estelle for an exclusive freestyle entitled 'What You Do'. The real highlights on this album for us (apart from obviously Lethal & Destruction), have to be all the Sterling Collat tracks. Big P and Dutty Skeme rude it up everytime with some refreshing London street commentary. Dirt-T also impresses on the banging 'So Ghetto' Freestyle with Estelle and watch out for the sounds of Tor, a female MC with a lot of talent and a good clear flow. This is a big mixtape with a lot of inspiringly good home-grown rap on it. Make sure you get a copy of this as soon as ya can!

K9 Presents - 'The Riot Storm' |
Friday, 11 February 2005 01:32 |
This mixtape impressed us from the off due to the packaging. It comes in a CD album box with shrink-wrapping and four-page booklet, and to be totally honest some albums don't get presented in such a professional way, never mind mixtapes! So yeah, the music – lets get to it. Well it's seventeen tracks deep and features Blak Twang on two joints, as well as freestyles over Roc-A-Fella and Rawkus instrumentals (which are exclusive to this CD), as well as featuring some fresh K9 tracks. Being a sik rapper and dope producer K9 could easily get tagged as being the UK's answer to Kayne West, especially if you think of Tony Rotton as being Jay Z and Rottonous Records being Roc-A-Fella! Basically it's like this if you like Roots Manuva, Ty, Karl Hinds and Rodney P then you are gonna eat this up. It's live, K9 is live and this mixtape is the f**king bomb. Maybe a few other UK artists should peep this mixtape and see the standard some artists and labels are making. Big up K9 and the whole Rottonous family for this. Heavy.

DJ RASTA ROOT & TALIB KWELI - 'Volume 4 - The Struggle Begins' |

DJ Rasta Root, Hosted by Talib Kweli Spitkicker Mixtape – Vol.4 'The Struggle Begins' www.spitkicker.com
Well what can we say?! Ever since Rasta Root told us he was sending over a package of his new mixtape we where eager to hear it, and when it dropped we wasn't disappointed! It has not left the stereo since the day it dropped thru the letterbox. The tracklisting comes like a 'whose who' in 2004 Hip-Hop with all angles covered with a display of various styles of tracks and artists. Its 'all killers' and 'no fillers' here with some hefty artists making the perfect mixtape. From the big banging street anthems by G Unit, D'Block & Jay Z, to the grimier sounds of Alchemist, Noyd and Havoc this mixtape also represents the authentic sound of Hip-Hop with tracks from the host Talib Kweli, Da La Soul, Kayne West, Mos Def and a special live recording of 'Scenario' by Tribe recorded in 1996 in Nashville. Southern rappers Scarface and Twista make appearance as does the West Coast's Snoop and Game. It's a big mixtape with something on there for everyone and is put together superbly by Rasta Roots, a DJ and producer making some serious moves.

CREAMO - 'The Best Of Creamo - Peep & Pass' |
Friday, 11 February 2005 01:29 |
Frostbitten, Liquid & Café Present… The Best Of CREAMO – The Peep & Pass
Hosted by K9 (Blak Twang's new signing) this mixtape comes from one of RAGO Magazines favourite London MC's…. Creamo. Creamo's style is real raw and although humorous at times he has the lyrical capacity to drop it in so many different styles. On the mixtape you get those now classic freestyles by Creamo that dropped on UK Runnings, DJ 279's show and Chubby Kid's show on Kiss FM, as well as a pisstake of a fake Tim Westwood interview which nuff struggling UK acts not getting radio play are gonna love and feel! 'Industry Doors', 'Streets My Witness' 'Brothers Keepers' and 'Feel Our Flow' are all tracks to bump loud, but on the whole this mixtape is just simply the bomb. Creamo is live and that's standard blud, but seriously you need to get a copy of this CD as its pure fire. Creamo, ya freezing bruv! Remember the Cream rises to the top!

This is solid, really solid. Every track sees the man like 730 deal with the matter with an array of excellent freestyles showcasing superb deliveries, flows, vocal tone as well as being a tight emcee. This mixtape is one of the best we’ve had from The States coz the tracks are so hot. 730 makes Ja Fool look stupid as he tears up ‘This Is New York’, deals with The Game’s anthem on ‘Roll Up’ with other highlights including the collaboration with The Realist and Swoop G entitled ‘F**k You’. 730 has microphone presence and rips sh*t hard. This ain’t no pussy emcee, this is gully street sh*t for the mans dem. Moblife Records are gonna be doing big thangs in 2005 so make sure you watch out for forthcoming releases including ‘From East 2 West’ from Tha Realist & 730, as well as the much anticipated solo album by Tupac Shakur’s brother Mopreme Shakur. We like Moblife Records, proper ish from the music to the presentation. 100% Official.

DJ EXCALIBAH - 'The Ex:Files - Document 1' |
Friday, 11 February 2005 01:29 |
Its funny to think that we actually interviewed DJ Excalibah back in the day when he was making noise with his show on London station 'Juice FM'. Since then he's gone from strength to strength and is now one of the UKs most respected radio and club deejays. His show on BBC 1xtra is now an important platform for UK & US independent rappers, and we all know he cuts it as a tough club DJ too with strings of live dates up and down the country. Now he drops his first official mixtape compilation full of action-packed Hip-Hop bangers. With exclusives from the London's Lowkey, Terra firm, Rodney P, and Lewis Parker and tracks from the likes of Krispy, Ironbridge, Skinnyman and Baby J this CD is a definite purchase for UK rap fans. Big up Dat & Excalibah for such a tight release.

DJ MC Presents - 'Through The Wire' |
Friday, 11 February 2005 01:28 |
Couple of things that really impressed us about this mixtape. Firstly it's the fact the actual CD is full colour print, looks sik with the sharp cover artwork giving the perfect visual for one of the better 'various artists' mixtapes on road at the moment. Secondly is the way its put together, the mixing is second to none and cuttin' is on point but doesn't take over the mix or get annoying. Tracks and freestyles come thick with not one bad track. From the intro, which is produced by Lil Brother's 9th Wonder, you know its big things. Joe Scudda, Nappy Roots, Fabulous, Lil Kim, Killer Mike, Black Own, Slim Calhoun, Mac, Nature, Ms. Jade and Smitty all feature on an impressive array of exclusives. Tracks by Styles P, Game, 50 Cent and Snoop do give it a good balanced feel too, making this such an enjoyable listening experience. Make sure you peep this.

MEDDAFORE - 'F*uck The Radio' |
Friday, 11 February 2005 01:27 |
Thirty four tracks deep this mixtape features some exclusive freestyles from a bunch of talented artists, but not 'obvious names'. MTV Battle Champ who got f*cked over by Roc-A-Fella 'Wreckonize' starts the proceedings with a heavy freestyle. Things continue to hot up with freestyles by Clipse, Pitbull, Clipse, Gacia and Brooklyn's Mr. Reck all really impressing. It's amazing that some of the cats on this mixtape ain't got major label deals. It's a refreshing listen from start to finish and its appeal is defiantly in the diverseness of the artists who give up jewels on this mixtape. Make sure you peep Meddafore's website as there's plenty more cutting edge mixes from Philly's Mixtape DJ of the year. Solid stuff.

Expect to hear the classic vocal tones of Show & AG, Krs One, Jeru, O.C, PE, Biggie, Nas, M.O.P, Lost Boyz and Royce Da 5'9 over some hefty beats. This is a definite purchase for fans of this era.
